Following a consultation two weeks ago with some of the attendees at our open days DCTV has developed a short studio operator training course for individuals and groups who want to use the DCTV studio for their projects.

The studio is designed for ease of use – you don’t need any previous television or film experience to use it. This 3 session course will explain how to turn everything on, how to troubleshoot the key pieces of equipment and how to record a basic show. It will also explain the rules for using the studio – how to check it is fully shut down and who can book the studio.

Combined with a policy on volunteering which is due to be discussed by the DCTV committee of management this training will form a core part of our plans to offer the studio to groups and individuals across Dublin’s communities. if you want to learn more please contact us – the first course is being run this week but places are quite limited. We will schedule more courses based on interest so get in touch if you would like to become a DCTV certified studio operator.

If you’d like some background on studio work take a look at our studio glossary for a comic explanation of the various roles.

We are a few days late bringing you the information on the new schedule, but hereit is for consumption now. Of course, don’t forget you can download the brochure for the July 2010 schedule.

Digital Culture: Steal This Film.

Part One, shot in Sweden and released in August 2006, combines accounts from prominent players in the Swedish piracy culture (The Pirate Bay, Piratbyrån, and the Pirate Party) with found material, propaganda-like slogans and Vox Pops. It includes interviews with The Pirate Bay members Fredrik Neij (tiamo), Gottfrid Svartholm (anakata) and Peter Sunde (brokep) that were later re-used by agreement in the documentary film Good Copy Bad Copy, as well as with Piratbyrån members Rasmus Fleischer (rsms), Johan (krignell) and Sara Andersson (fraux).
The film is notable for its critical analysis of an alleged regulatory capture attempt performed by the Hollywood film lobby to leverage economic sanctions by the United States government on Sweden through the WTO. Evidence is presented of pressure applied through Swedish courts on Swedish police to conducting a search and seizure against to disrupt The Pirate Bay’s BitTorrent tracker service, in contravention of Swedish law.

Showing in the scond half of Fresh 2 on Weds 1900, Thurs 1230, Sun 1230

Vodo Mixtape 1.

We’re proud in DCTV to be adding this first VODO MIXTAPE to our schedule. Actual tape might be a thing of the past, but before P2P, mixtapes were the most popular way of sharing popular culture the world had known — and once called the ‘most widely practiced American art form’. Vodo.net want to resuscitate the spirit of the mixtape for this VODO MIXTAPE series: compilations of their favourite shorts, the weird, the wild and the wonky, all brought together in a temporary and uncomfortable company.

Vodo’s twist is that they see themselves as providing a mechanism where the artist or producer can recoup some of the costs of making their work available through donations and the like. It’s monetisation scheme that’s worked wonders for films like Nasty Old People. Never mind the exposure given to film makers through the networks of viewers. The first mix tape contains a brutal portrait of an unofficial town crier in Boston. A piece of end of the world sci-fi rammed together in 48 hours for the International Film Shoot Out. A drama where trust between Moscow newly weds faces its first test. A birth day party where no body turns up. And a rather gore-filled animation.

Gimme the Camera plays on Thurs 20:30, Friday 20:30, Saturday 20:30, Sunday 23:00

Highlights This Month.

Here’s the cream of the crop for July. More descriptions can be found over at dctv.ie…

Dublin Voices 2
Monday 1230 and Friday 1900//

This discussion programme came about as part of a four-class media literacy course facilitated by DCTV and funded by Dublin Community Forum. Through both classroom sessions and practical studio workshops the participants were
brought through the various ways media works, both mainstream and our model of community media. This programme was driven by the participants and took place on Wednesday, 9th June 2010. If anyone out there is interested in taking part

Gilbert
Give me the camera//

Nathaniel Hansen’s ‘Gilbert’ is a stark portrait of Boston’s Beacon Hill ‘town crier.’ For the last 9 years, since losing his job and becoming homeless, Gilbert has delivered the weather, sports, and breaking headlines from his spot on the Boston Common.
author ‘This is the first in a series of profiles of people who I think are interesting, and who I see on almost a daily basis,’ says Nathaniel. ‘I don’t want to limit the series to people who live “on the fringe,” but it would be appropriate to say that most of the people I interview are eclectic, eccentric, and just a little bit unique. I hope to turn my lens on individuals that don’t always color in the lines, whether they can help it or not.’
Lilah
Give me the camera //

Lilah is a psychic, about 55 years old, who has lived within the same 2 block radius in downtown Boston her entire life. Her neighbourhood, once rife with crime, drug abuse, strip clubs and prostitution, is now home to luxury high-rise buildings and multiple college campuses. Her business and home, and a few of the other area taverns and restaurants, are the last of the ‘old time’ holdouts. ‘The idea of interviewing a psychic interested me early on in this project,’ says Nathaniel, ‘as I pass several on my walking route each day. I worked up the nerve to buzz the psychic on the second floor of one building in particular, and was immediately buzzed up. There I met Lilah who was very, very reluctant to be interviewed.”

Watch Alice Breed
Give me the camera //

Watch Alice Bleed’ is a gore-filled stop motion animation. It opens with Alice being decapitated, and having her head fed to a ‘gorehound’. Then things start to get really gruesome.Fredrik Andersson studied animation at Konstfack art school in 2002. He lives and works in Eksjö, Sweden and has been a member of Eksjö Animation since 2006.and sound.

June Open Days in the Studio.

The DCTV studio on Thomas street has been in operation for over a year now. Spread over 1,200 sq. m the studio has a large sound stage, a fully digital remote control camera control room, sound desk and basic lighting rig. There is also meeting space and storage for a huge range of shows.

In recent weeks a number of volunteer produced shows have been produced for the studio. If you are interested in developing a show, volunteering on a show or just having a nose around to see what a TV studio looks like we are running open afternoons every Friday for the month of June. Starting a 2pm with a tour of the faiclities we’re open to training / planning or just hacking the studio with whoever turns up.

Call the office at 01 5111209 between 1 and 2pm on a Friday or drop a mail to studio@dctv.ie before hand to confirm your place. If you’ve free time, a general interest in making media or have a project sitting on the back burner that could come to life if someone let you loose in a fully equipped TV studio its well worth dropping down to have a look. We’re hoping that these open days will see teams formed, productions planned and possibly some projects developed for our Autumn and later schedules.

Ireland’s Most Innovative Urban Beats and Multicultural Show.

The G-Request show is a new and stylish Irish music multicultural Entertainment talk show and is a growing fast within the entertainment industry. They provide entertainment opportunity to upcoming artists and creatives. The show has supported various showcases around the country. They have developed public awareness of gifted and creatives individuals and groups that reside within Ireland.

They have members from different nationalities, groups and communities within the country. They provide creative entertainment, and bring forward many undiscovered talents. The show employs live stage performance and interview and behind the scenes stories to bring these artists to the public. This provides a forum for those who are looking or waiting to get their talent discovered.

The G Request show will play as part of Fresh at Mon 1900, Tues 1230 and Sat 1230. It will also go out as the first programme in our Entertainment block for the next few months.

If you want to take part in the show, get in touch with DCTV and we’ll put you on to the organisers.

Pedal Project Discussion
Monday 1230 and Friday 1900//

From the reasons we should, and shouldn’t, insist on cycling helmets to how we design our roads to create dedicated spaces for cycling while ensuring ‘permeable’ road systems with a mix of transport forms – The Pedal Project is the most complete and wide ranging analysis of cycling in Dublin yet. Fashion, politics, health, quality of life all show up as Dublin Community Television brings its own unique style of media making to the issue. Visually arresting, we see how Dublin compares to London and Amsterdam and hear voices from all strata and corners of our city.

Reel Youth
Give me the camera//

Reel Youth’s main objective is to get young people from different projects to meet each other and realise common interests. It’s a project that sets out to leave media skills embedded with both the participating young people and their youth workers. Founded by Bradóg Regional Youth Services, it’s mandated to work with young people in the North West Inner City through their voluntary participation in activities and processes that have positive outcomes. They have pioneered video-making with young people with lesser opportunities and, for the past five years, supported young people to make national and international award-winning short films. Bradóg founded the coveted Reel Youth Film Festival and is an active member of the European youth organisation, Empower Media Network.

Cannonball Run
Give me the camera //

If your idea of a learning curve involves diving in at the deep end, then the Cannonball run might hold some shades of interest for budding film makers in Dublin. Lining itself up to be the amphetamine fueled X-Factor of off kilter film making, it’s based on Stateside events like the NYC Midnight Run and the Screenwriters’ Challenge that put creatives under pressure cooker conditions to churn out product. With just 24 hours across the last weekend in March to shoot and edit a 3 minute film, the event promises moments of Darwinian natural selection galore with digital meltdowns at the edit stage and scrambles for locations and cast at the start.

Deirdres Passions
Give me the camera//

Directed by Ger Consadine, the documentary ‘Deirdre’s Passsions’ is a short which tells the story of the Galway author Deirdre Manifold , one-time girlfriend of the notorious Irish poet, Patrick Kavanagh

Deaf Block Relaunched.

When DCTV launched we underwent a large consultation with the Irish Deaf Society around provision of accessible material. In 2009 however we worked with other support groups, in particular with groups focussing on physical access issues and intellectual disabilities. We produced content in this area rather than with the deaf community. This meant that we did not have as much content available specifically for the deaf community and rather than continuing to run the same limited signed content we discontinued the Deaf Block we we had run for 2008 and into 2009.

While we did not focus as much on work with the Deaf community during 2009 we did broadcast a wide range of material which had been subtitled due to the availability of a significant amount of Sound and Vision funded material which had all been subtitled, as well as international and home grown documentaries that were sub titled.

We also started to broadcast material with subtitles as standard in part through discussion with groups such as the NIID and other groups we worked with on the Access for All series. In part this was to avoid distinguishing between people who were subtitled because of indistinct speech and others.

From May on DCTV will once again broadcast a special daily hour of subtitled material at 9am every day. Expect the best in subtitled content from across our schedules.

Studio Update Storyworld.

Children’s stories are very often fables that use characters and the story itself to gently illustrate how good behaviour can be rewarded and vice versa. There is a rich tradition of story telling all over the world and although stories are told in many different languages and styles, a good story rather like a good piece of music, has a universality that knows no boundaries and can travel with ease around the globe.

Working alongside Spirasi, DCTV aims to capture the art of story telling with stories from Africa and the Middle East. We want to bring these tales from diverse cultures to school children from a number of different Dublin schools, with the stories told by the authentic voices of immigrants to Ireland.

Working through a partnership with the Home School Community Liason Scheme, we were able to identify a number of primary schools in the city centre that would appreciate participating in the project. So far we have had kids from Basin Lane, St Mary’s Place and Balbriggan Educate together into our studio.

The stories will be further brought to life with the use of animation, traditional songs and set designs that will aim to conjure up the essence of their county of origin. We have currently carried out 3 shoots, coverings stories from Ireland, India and Africa. If you log on to our Facebook or Flickr page you can check out a range of photographs taken from the shoots in our studio.

Raising Standards
Around the country//

Against the backdrop of continuing violence and civilian deaths talks between the four main political parties are reconvened at Stormont. Under the banner of Radical Arts Theatre a group of artists created works to celebrate May Day in the Donegall Street area of Belfast: original compositions and recordings, theatrical backdrops, banners, visual art projects, installations, outdoor music events with street stalls, indoor poetry performances and video production were undertaken. Those taking part were Máighréad Medbh, Gerry McGovern, Vivien Burnside, Liam de Frinse, Benjamin Zephaniah, William Ennis, Michael Baker, Dave Hyndman, Tom Bevan and Mark Alexander
My Brother, Our Kidney.
Around the Country//

In this documentary we meet local artist and musician Kyron Bourke as he takes the life changing step of donating his kidney to his brother Brendan. This film follows Kyron through his emotional journey as he faces up to the risk and consequences of this act of kindness.

Giros
Independent Media //

This is the story of wow a disparate group of young people got together in the time of Thatcher and urged others “don’t accept your lot in life”. Rediscover the A Centre, Giros, the Belfast Youth & Community Group, Warzine and the strands of the punk movement, which continued throughout the 1980s to build resources and non-sectarian space in Belfast city centre. The experiment lasted 17 years and contributed to building the foundations of the music industry in Northern Ireland..

Habbibi Jammin
Digital Stories//

Habibi Jammin’takes us beyond the headlines and into the lives of four young people from the Arabic community in the troubled Western Sydney suburb of Bankstown. Nomise, Julie, Susan and Matuse are the most talented and articulate participants in the Jammin” in the Middle E drama project – which promises to produce a television drama based on stories from their lives. We follow them through the production stages of this unique drama process and look at how they respond when given the opportunity to tell their own stories.
